If you like soundtracks as much as we do, pop over HERE to the BBC's website and check out the
latest SOUND OF CINEMA show. Host Matthew Sweet (not the power pop star, mind you) and guest, film composer Steven Price play sections from British sci-fi films, then get into short, yet intelligent dissections of them. FIRST MEN IN THE MOON, ALIEN, BRAZIL, UNDER THE SKIN, and others are represented. Available for your listening pleasure until January 4, 2015.
Laika Studios new project KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS sounds amazing! The creative powerhouse behind CORALINE, PARANORMAN, and THE BOXTROLLS starts work on it's fourth film.
An original story, with Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, Rooney Mara, Ralph Fiennes, and Brenda Vaccaro. Art Parkinson, who plays Rickon Stark on Game of Thrones, on board to voice the characters, in a tale that is ”a sweeping, swashbuckling adventure set in a mythical ancient Japan.”
In the epic fantasy, scruffy, kindhearted Kubo ekes out a humble living while devotedly caring for his
mother in their sleepy shoreside village. It is a quiet existence – until a spirit from the past catches up with him to enforce an age-old vendetta. Suddenly on the run from gods and monsters, Kubo’s chance for survival rests on finding the magical suit of armor once worn by his fallen father, the greatest samurai the world has ever known. Summoning courage, Kubo embarks on a thrilling odyssey as he faces his family’s history, navigates the elements, and bravely fights for the earth and the stars.
Bring it on! KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS opens August 19, 2016
It looks like there is a new zombie movie worth getting excited about. Ozsploitation bizarro
horror/action flick WYRMWOOD: ROAD OF THE DEAD has been wowing them on the festival circuit. Now it's coming to cable, VOD, and select cinemas February 13 courtesy of IFC and Ravens Banner. Sweet bloody brains!
The up-coming EVIL DEAD series, being delivered by Starz, promises to bring the blood...and two new major characters.
"We're going to give people a little of the old fashioned splatstick—horror and comedy. The fans have been really good to us over the years. This is an opportunity to do something with full street cred… Something we're doing is taking the horror parts very seriously. We're not making fun of the horror aspects. And it's going to cause Ash—this crabby middle-aged man who doesn't want to get dragged back into this—a lot of problems. He's not the Ash he used to be… And the beauty of Starz is there's no content issues. Let's face it: Fans want the carnage and the mayhem. So we intend to give them quite the explosion of viscera. Most of it directed at me, unfortunately."
As for the two new players in Raimi's world of Deadites...
"It's a threesome, which is a good number. Since it's not cast yet, it would be silly to fully describe them. But they're supposed to be two very good counterparts. One is a male-bonding situation; the other is father-figure deal, since Ash could have a daughter the same age as this character. Hopefully we'll pull Ash out of his loner-veteran mode and get him back into being a human being again."
With the success of shows like THE WALKING DEAD (which I always found to be a...wait for it...no brainer!), AMERICAN HORROR STORY, and PENNY DREADFUL, the time is certainly right for Campbell and Co. to come along and reap the rewards of a television audience hungry for more small screen horror. My question is, can the cable version of the franchise truly sustain an entire series? How goofy is it all going to get? I'm surprisingly unexcited about it all, but...I will indeed be watching when the series is finally unveiled.
Gone Girl's Kim Dickens lands the lead in WALKING DEAD spin-off COBALT. Playing guidance
counselor nancy Tomkins, single mother of two, and girlfriend of co-worker Sean cabrera, played by Cliff Curtis (ONCE WERE WARRIORS, BLOW, the tv series BODY F PROOF), COBALT centers around the early days of the zombie epidemic.
At SLC ComiCon a year ago, I was asked while moderating a zombie panel "What do you think the future of tv zombies is" to which I quickly answered "Spin-offs and downright knock-offs of TWD, and nothing out of the box" when literally a week later, COBALT (then with no title) was announced. While
I won't lament it yet, here's hoping it's not in the vein of stuff like LAW AND ORDER and the CSI franchise. I'm seriously hoping for something with it's own tone, rather than a plodding rehash of what we already have, which admittedly, I think has it's up's and down's. But again, like the EVIL DEAD series, I will absolutely be tuning in with fingers crossed.
COBALT is lfeshed out by actors Frank Dillane (HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE) and Alycia Debnam Carey (the up-coming INTO THE WOODS) as the kids. We shall see!
One of my all-time favorite review magazines, VIDEO WATCHDOG, run by the incredibly knowledgeable Tim and Donna Lucas is now digitized, and for sale online. This is amazing news, as vintage back issues are treasures that can be difficult to get ahold of, and Tim is one of the premier speakers/thinkers on film, the horror genre in particular. I've always been a fan, and his dvd commentaries for things like the Mario bava films are invaluable to fans like myself who love to dig into the past and learn more about the little-known histories of films like BLACK SUNDAY, 5 DOLLS FOR AN AUGUST MOON, and BARON BLOOD.
Tim and Donna's long running VIDEO WATCHDOG was one of the first to seriously delve into the obscure, dating back to the days of VHS and Laserdiscs, and still going strong in the age of bluray and streaming media. truly indispensable and highly recommended. You can also find Lucas' sprawling achievement of a book, ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK, an incredibly in-depth history of the cinema of Mario Bava, also for sale on the site in digital format. trust me, this is amazing stuff and I recommend you all run and don't walk to the VIDEO WATCHDOG site, and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity immediately! You can find free samples there, and if that doesn't peak your interest there's just no hope for your wretched soul!
I'm hearing good things about IT FOLLOWS, which looks to be a supernatural horror film with psycho-sexual overtones. It's on my list for the Sundance Film festival this year, where I'll be seeing a whole lot of movies in a very short period of time/ I basically live for thesekind of weeks, cramming 3, 4, sometimes 5 movies in every day, for a glorious week-plus. So be sure to follow this blog for a ton more on what I'll be seeing, and next month for what I've seen. Last year yielded some great discoveries, such as BLUE RUIN, COLD IN JULY, WHITE SHADOW, and THE SIGNAL, and THE BABADOOK. This year I am sure shall be no different. So, let's get the party started. here's the trailer for IT FOLLOWS -
